Ribbon House

The Ribbon House uses a gestural path through transitional spaces of the home to join private and shared spaces of the house, granting residents agency in how they spend their time — and who they spend it with — from the minute they come home. Designed for two single mothers and their children, space for individual family time is prioritized in the split level private units, but shared space is celebrated in the open kitchen and dining concept. The ribbon ties together the distinct parts of living with others; spatializing the balance between time together and apart, what is communal and what is not.

Balancing privacy, gathering, and community creates distinct moments of connection and individuality throughout the home. The two zones maintain a relationship with the street and neighbors through visual connection with the private units, while the shared kitchen looks out onto the site and the rest of the shared campus of educator housing. The ribbon weaves between the interior and exterior, beginning at an adaptable carport, passing through the mudroom and entry hall, and extending to a shared outdoor space.
